Onkyo TX-SR706 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

Now that you've got your widescreen TV and are enjoying HDTV channels, the next step is to get a home-theater sound system to complement your overall experience. When you decide to add Blu-Ray to your home-theater, the Onkyo TX-SR706 is ready to output 7.1 channels of clear, definitive surround sound through your speaker system (speakers not included with receiver). THX Select2 Plus certification, with THX Loudness Plus, ensures the TX-SR706 is ideally suited for a room where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is approximately 10 to 12 feet, and the room size is approximately 2000 cubic feet. By achieving THX Select2 Plus certification, the TX-SR706 meets the world's most demanding home theater standards for audio quality and performance, and promises to play at reference volume levels with minimal distortion. Also, a new technology, THX Loudness Plus, improves how you experience movies at lower volume levels. To counteract the loss or distortion of ambient and bass sounds at lower volumes, THX Loudness Plus automatically adjusts the front-to-back speaker levels and frequency balance. This ensures that you can experience all the details of your movies when listening below the reference level. Great product, not to hard to set up the Audessy setup with Loudness control and speaker set up was great. I never realized how cool true surround sound is. It supports all types of formats, Doby, THX. Very happy with my purchase.

BEWARE...when blu-ray is passed thru the receiver via hdmi there are blue artifacts in the blacks. I confirmed with Onkyo that this is a known defect and they do not have a current fix. I returned my order to Amazon and will look for a different brand.

Not much else to say other than that this is a fantastic receiver. Thus far all of the features have worked out of the box. There have been past complaints about the Audyssey MultEQ being inoperative (ie does not detect speakers) however mine did immediately on plugging in the microphone. My only problem with the Audyssey MultEQ is that it set up the system as if there were a subwoofer attached despite it properly detecting none. All the highs and mids were well apparent but the lows were missing for the most part. Once I finally get a subwoofer I will set it up again and see how it works out. Regardless, this is the finest receiver I've heard though I must admit that my experience is somewhat limited. The only real issue I have with the system is that it will not play a digital audio stream to speaker zone 2, only analogue.

This unit is so nice and so feature packed all I can say is buy it! I purchased a Sony STR-DG820 a week or so prior to this Onkyo TX-SR706 arrived. I thought that unit was pretty nice with auto speaker set up etc. This unit does all that does plus alot more. My Sony is run with new Samsung 52-650, my vizo ended up with Onkyo in basement family room. The remote that came with Onkyo had code for Vizo while my Sony didn't so if anyone has a wife that gets frustrated by too many remotes that alone was a god send. This unit just does so many things good and even remote = that extra step value... 5 stars...can i go higher?

An excellent AV receiver, The automatic speaker calibration is quite easy, plenty of audio/video inputs (of which can be reassigned to source mode through the on screen setup), works with HDMI CEC so that the reciever power and volume can be controlled via my TV (sharp) The remote controls my entire setup including cable box flawlessly.
The only quirk I have to complain about is that if you are using an HDMI connection, it will not play audio if there is no video signal. (only really an issue if you are planning on using a PC as a source)
