Black & Decker CD9602K 9.6-Volt Ni-Cad 3/8-Inch Cordless Drill/Driver Kit

Great for drilling pilot holes and driving screws in wood, metal and plastic, Black & Decker's 9.6-volt cordless drill/driver kit is lightweight enough for fixes and upgrades around the house and durable enough for years of use. Equipped with a keyless chuck, bit changes with this 3/8-inch drill are quick and simple. A 6-position clutch adjusts torque to prevent screws from stripping. On-board bit storage offers easy access to a variety of bits for less downtime and more productivity. The drill's mid-handle design balances the meat of the tool over the hand for easy fore-and-aft control. And, soft grips ensure optimal comfort. Variable speeds between 0 and 700 rpm in both forward and reverse let you ease screws into place to avoid splitting, or zip them in quickly to get the job done fast. Cranking out 100 inch-pounds of torque, the tool easily drills and drives smaller bits through light metals, as well as tackling wood and plastic applications around the house. Best of all, at just over 8 inches long and 8 inches tall, this 2-1/4-pound drill is easy on the wrist. The purchase is covered by a manufacturer, 2-year warranty. --Brian D. Olson

Review by Woodworker Kacz from Lemont, IL USA:

I bought this drill to replace my 25 year old Craftsman 9.6v for which they no longer make batteries. Disappointed doesn't even come close. This unit has never been able to hold a charge since day one. Don't let it sit over night without recharging. It won't have any power in the morning. I finally sucked it up and bought a Makita 6260 9.6v. It was a whole lot more than I paid for this piece of junk. But then again, you get what you pay for. I've always told my kids buy the best you can afford and you won't be disappointed. I finally listened to myself.

Review by a reader from Irvine:

Purchased from Lowes at a reasonable price, this drill should contain a warning label: FOR LIGHT USE ONLY!

My first project involved drilling small holes into oak window boxes for blinds. No problem.

My second project involved drilling larger holes (1/4") into wall tile for a new shower curtain rod. Oh my God! After trying a titanium bit followed by a masonry bit, I finally got through the tile with a carbide bit but nearly burnt out the motor in the process (and drove myself to exhaustion with the pressure I needed to apply).

I am not a heavy user of power tools but if you cannot drill a simple hole in a bathroom tile, fuggedaboutit!
